Dublin
One of Europe’s oldest capital cities, Dublin is home to a youthful population of 470,000 people. 30% of the national population is based in the Dublin region, of which 43% is under 25 years of age. Fifteen acute public hospitals provide services to the City in addition to six private hospitals.
Dublin is home to some of Europe’s most respected educational institutions such as Trinity College and University College Dublin. The combined total enrolment for 99-00 was 20,000 with another 20,000 enrolled at the Dublin Institute of Technology for the year 00-01.
Renowned as a world-class technology location, the City hosts a fast growing community of world class companies (500+) including Citibank, Hertz, Microsoft, IBM, Hewlett Packard and Intel. Dublin also has a strong base of indigenous software businesses including Iona Technologies, Baltimore Technologies and Smart Force.
Support for enterprise in Dublin is spearheaded by: IDA Ireland, Enterprise Ireland, Dublin County Enterprise Board and FAS Employment Services.
IDA Ireland has 10 sites in the City with a total area of 90 hectares, 79% of which is available for use.
Mainline passenger and freight rail networks connect Dublin to the major towns and cities throughout Ireland. The Enterprise Service operating from Connolly Station links Dublin with Belfast and has played a key role in facilitating Ireland’s emerging all island business market. The Dublin Area Rapid Transit (DART) service offers commuters excellent city centre links with Dublin suburbs. Dublin Airport, just 20 minutes from the City Centre is one of the fastest growing airports in the world with daily connections to major European cities and North America. Dublin Port is Ireland’s major port and offers facilities for conventional container and Roll On/ Roll Off cargo.
